UNDERSTANDING THE EN407 STANDARD

EN407 is the European test for protection against thermal hazards such as heat, flame, and molten metal.

In 2020 the EN407 was updated, introducing a subcategory focused on ONLY protection against contact heat. Suppose the glove has not undergone a burning behaviour test or does not meet level 1. In that case, a new pictogram will be employed to signify the difference.

Under the symbol six different values relating to the protection, the glove will give against certain risks. The test results are presented with numbers describing the level of protection:

LIMITED FLAME SPREAD

Values: 1-4, the highest rating is 4

The glove is tested with a gas flame for 10 seconds. After the flame is out, the time is measured for how long the glove either burn or ember. The lower the time, the higher the protection value.

The glove is exposed to heat between +100°C and +500°C. It is then measured how long it takes for the temperature to increase by 10°C inside the glove. The longer the time, the higher the protection value.

The glove is tested with a gas flame and the time is measured how long it takes to increase the temperature inside the glove by 24°C. The longer the time, the higher the protection value.

The glove is tested in front of a heat source, and the average time is measured for the heat to penetrate the glove material by 24°C. The longer the time, the higher the protection value.

Drops of molten metal is dripped on the glove in this test. The number of drops needed to increase the temperature by 40°C inside the glove is counted. The more drops needed, the higher the protection value.

Molten metal is poured over the glove. The total weight is measured of how much molten metal is needed to damage a patch of simulated skin inside the glove.
